Handball - 18 Apr 2012 - Infront Sports and Media, the Switzerland-based international sports agency, and the European Handball Federation have announced a record international television audience for the EHF Euro 2012 national teams competition, which took place in Serbia in January.
Infront said today that the competition was watched by a cumulative television audience of 1.47 billion with coverage shown by 75 broadcasters in over 200 countries, including various Asian territories in which Infront closed deals and where there had not been coverage of the tournament for some time.
The audience is a 43-per-cent increase on the 1.03-billion figure recorded for the 2010 edition of the biennial tournament, and a 20-per-cent increase on the previous all-time record of 1.22 billion for the 2008 tournament.
The results are based on analysis compiled by Sport+Markt, the sports marketing consultancy and research group, and information from rights-holding broadcasters.
The number of broadcast hours shown from the 2012 tournament was 1,898 hours, a notable increase on the 1,700 hours in 2010.
This year’s tournament marked the first time that the men’s European Championships had been fully produced in high-definition.
A record of over 300,000 spectators watched the matches at this year’s tournament at five different venues in Serbia (compared to 280,000 spectators at the men’s EHF Euro 2010 in Austria).
The number of visits to the official tournament website (www.ehf-euro.com) was 2.45 million for this year’s event, almost three times the total of 900,000 visits for the 2010 competition, while the number of page views more than doubled from 4.61 million to 9.99 million from tournament to tournament.
A total of 860,000 videos from the tournament were watched on the tournament’s official channel on YouTube, the popular video-sharing and live streaming website that showed free live, delayed, news and highlights coverage from Serbia.
Tor Lian, the EHF president, said: "The media results for the men’s EHF Euro are truly remarkable and underline the success of the partnership between the EHF and Infront.
"It is very pleasing to see the continued growth of the competition and the EHF Euro brand with record numbers of spectators, TV viewers and visitors to our online platforms. These results suggest that together with the upcoming women’s EHF Euro in the Netherlands, the handball year 2012 will most likely break all previous media coverage records."
