Triathlon - 19 Apr 2012 - The International Triathlon Union, the world governing body for the sport, today opened the bidding for cities and national federations interested in hosting races in its annual second-tier Triathlon World Cup series next year.
Marisol Casado, the ITU’s president, said: “ITU is still deeply committed to our World Cup series as it is still a crucial part of the elite pathway to the Olympic Games and World Championships. Host cities can showcase itself to a global audience while developing national triathlon programmes.”
Cities wanting to host races must submit bid documents together with their respective national federations by June 1, 2012.
The ITU said: “ITU World Cups offer a well organised series of triathlons with good global balance. It is intended to provide a solid and professional base for athletes pursuing entry to the ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS) and qualification for the Olympics Games and other major games.
“Hosting an ITU World Cup offers cities the opportunity to showcase themselves to substantial television audiences worldwide while attracting thousands of international guests and race participants.”
This year’s nine-race World Cup series began in Mooloolaba, Australia on March 24 and 25 and ends in Cancun, Mexico on October 7.
