FIBA, basketball’s international federation, has established FIBA Media & Marketing Services SA, a wholly-owned subsidiary that will focus on the federation’s media, marketing and event activities and will be headed by managed by Frank Leenders and Thomas Klooz, former executives at the Team Marketing agency.
FIBA said today that it has entered into a long-term co-operation with Leenders and Klooz though their sports marketing firm Value Experience Ltd., which was first established in Zurich late last year.
The new subsidiary will operate from the federation’s headquarters in Geneva and is to concentrate on the "development, management and delivery of all of FIBA’s media, marketing and event activities, and related partnerships, including those for FIBA’s flagship competition, the FIBA Basketball World Cup."
Leenders assumes the role of director general at FIBA Media & Marketing Services SA, while Klooz is to be appointed as delegate to the board.
Leenders and Klooz left their top-level positions at Team Marketing, which markets the commercial rights to European club soccer’s top-tier Uefa Champions League and second-tier Uefa Europa League, after a new management structure was announced in June 2010.
Klooz was joint chief executive of Team together with Martin Wagner, while Leenders was managing director of event operations.
FIBA said that the new subsidiary would "continue to build on the strength and commitment of the experienced professionals from the commercial and event team of FIBA."
Patrick Baumann, FIBA secretary general, said: "This is a milestone in the history of FIBA. With this development we are well structured to enhance and further promote the position of FIBA’s basketball competitions as a premium global sport. We have made significant progress and achieved good results over the past decade.
"It is the right time for FIBA to move forward and we are ready to do so. The experience of Thomas Klooz and Frank Leenders, two highly recognised professionals, will enable us to progress FIBA to the next stage in the commercial area."
Klooz and Leenders said in a joint statement: "Together with FIBA we have explored the significant untapped potential of national team basketball on a global level. We are proud to be heading the operation of this new organisation with a great team and look forward to putting our experience at the service of an exciting premium sport."
Leenders left Team in 2001 to join Stream, the Italian pay-television operator, as head of sports rights acquisitions, but returned to Team in 2002. Klooz moved up from the role of deputy chief executive to chief executive at Team at the beginning of 2006 following the departure of former chief executive Richard Worth.
