Boxing - 11 Jul 2012 - Ukraine, Bulgaria and Canada have been awarded hosting rights to some of boxing top biennial properties in 2013 and 2014, the executive committee of AIBA, the global governing body for amateur and Olympic boxing, has announced.
Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, will stage the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in 2013, the first time the country has hosted a major boxing event.
Vladimir Prodyvus, president of the Ukrainian Boxing Federation, said: "2013 will celebrate the 100 years of Soviet Boxing and we will make sure that this competition will be part of great celebrations."
The junior championships comprise 13 weight categories, and are open to boxers aged between 15 and 16. Astana in Kazakhstan staged the 2011 edition.
Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, will stage the 2014 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships, which involve boxers aged 17 to 18 competing across 11 weight categories. Bangkok will host this year's AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in October. The Thai capital stepped in after Italy, which had been the only official bidder, withdrew last December.
Canada was awarded the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, also in 2014, although the host city has yet to be confirmed. Boxing Canada said that Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Quebec City were all in the running to stage the event.
Qinhuangdo in China hosted this year's competition in May. It was the sole qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games at which women's boxing will make its games debut, with three weight categories: flyweight, lightweight and middleweight.
