Sailing - 28 Sep 2012 - The trio in the running to succeed Sweden’s Goran Petersson, who will be stepping down after two terms in the post, are Carlo Croce from Italy, David Kellett from Australia and Eric Tulla from Puerto Rico.
The elections will take place on November 10, during the ISAF General Assembly at Dun Laoghaire in Ireland. Seven vice-presidents will be elected at the same time.
Petersson became president in 2004, when he took over from the long-serving Canadian Paul Henderson, and was re-elected unopposed in 2008. He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee and a member of the council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.
Croce competed in the Flying Dutchman class in the Olympic sailing regattas in 1972 and 1976 before moving into offshore racing and has since been involved in several America’s Cup campaigns, including the Luna Rossa challenges in 2001, 2004 and 2007, the latter two as president. He has been president of the FIV, the Italian sailing federation, since 2008.
Kellett is another experienced sailor who competed in Olympic classes before graduating to ocean racing and the America’s Cup. He is the current ISAF treasurer and was a member of the organising committee for the 2011 Sailing World Championships in Perth and the technical delegate for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympics.
Tulla represented Puerto Rico in numerous sailing competitions, including the Soling class at the 1984 Olympics, and has held a variety of roles at the national federation. He has been a vice-president and executive committee member of the ISAF since 2008.
The successful candidate will serve a four-year term, running until November 2016.
There are 14 candidates for the seven vice-president posts, two of which must be women.
