Swimming - 01 Oct 2012 - The Italian, an LEN bureau member since 2008, was voted in at the LEN Congress in Cascais, Portugal on Saturday, and succeeds Nory Kruchten of Luxembourg.
Barelli said: "It is our aim to keep up the high level of European aquatics, although it will not be easy in these economically difficult times. With an effort of the entire LEN team we might be able to get it done."
The 58-year-old has been president of the Italian Swimming Federation since 2000 and honorary secretary of FINA, the world governing body for aquatic sports, since 2009.
He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games and won a bronze medal at the 1975 World Championships, thereby becoming the first Italian medallist at the global event. Christa Thiel, president of the German Swimming Federation, is the new vice president of LEN. She previously served as treasurer and has been replaced in that role by Tamas Gyarfas from Hungary.
The UK's David Sparkes replaced Norway's Sven Egil Folvik as LEN general secretary. Also at the congress, Denmark pipped Israel to be awarded hosting rights to the 2013 European Short Course Championships.
The event will take place at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning between December 12 and 15 next year.
The 2013 championships will be the first to be held under a new biennial format implemented by LEN, in accordance with FINA, to avoid overcrowding the calendar.
The championships have traditionally been an annual event, but after 2013 the next event will be held in 2015 so that it alternates with the biennial FINA World Short Course Championships, which is staged in even years.
The 2012 European Short Course Championships will be held in Chartres, France from November 22 to 25, while this year's FINA World Short Course Championships are slated for Istanbul, Turkey between December 12 and 16.
Doha in Qatar will host the 2014 World Short Course Championships.
Four other events were allocated at the LEN Congress:- 2014 European Junior Diving Championships - Bergamo (Italy) 2014 European Junior Open Water Swimming Championships - Zagreb (Croatia) 2015 European Junior Swimming Championships - Hodmezovasarhely (Hungary) 2015 European Junior Diving Championships - Rijeka (Croatia)
The next LEN Congress will be hosted by British Swimming, in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 28, 2013.
