Confederations Cup Retains Six Venues as Fifa Allows More Time for Stadia to be Completed |

Football - 09 Nov 2012 - Fifa, soccer’s international governing body, has confirmed that the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, the dress rehearsal for the World Cup in the same country a year later, will make use of the six stadia initially envisaged but the hosts still face a challenge to have the venues ready in time.
The Confederations Cup, which involves Brazil, World Cup holders Spain and the champions of six continental championships, will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, from June 15 to 30.
Fifa had stated that the stadia must be ready six months before the event but concerns over some of the venues, notably those in north-east cities of Recife and Salvador, have prompted it to relax its stance and insist that work is completed four months in advance.
Construction of the Arena Pernambuco in Recife is now more than 70-per-cent complete, builders Odebrecht have said.
Speaking at a news conference in Sao Paulo, Jose Maria Marin, the chairman of the World Cup organising committee, said that Fifa had been “convinced by the words and guarantees delivered by the representatives of the six cities.”
The 2014 World Cup is set to involve 12 venues, which are presently at different stages of development.
Jerome Valcke, the Fifa general secretary, who is overseeing the preparations for the tournament, said last week that the Confederations Cup would be an “acid test” for Fifa and the organisers ahead of the 2014 event.
It was announced yesterday that 830,000 tickets will be available for the 16 matches at the earlier tournament, with sales to begin on December 3.
