Games - 09 Nov 2012 - Dubai did not pull out of the bidding to host the Asian Games in 2019, contrary to information given out by the Olympic Council of Asia, having never actually submitted a bid, according to the United Arab Emirates Olympic Committee.
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was yesterday chosen to host the 18th edition of the Asian Games in 2019, marking the first time that the event will have been held in the country.
Hanoi was selected ahead of Surabaya in Indonesia in a vote at the OCA’s general assembly in Macau.
The contest was expected to be a three-way race but Dubai was said to have pulled out, with the OCA saying that Dubai, which regularly hosts top golf, cricket, tennis and horse racing events, preferred to concentrate on hosting a future games.
Following the vote, Yousuf Al Sarkal, the UAE Olympic committee’s first vice-president, said: “The UAE's National Olympic Committee did not apply for hosting 2019 Asian Games and it only considered this. Therefore the news reports are baseless.”
Dubai could now turn its attention to a bid to host the Olympic games in 2024, after a feasibility study concluded that 70 per cent of the required infrastructure to host the games is already in place.
