The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced that Mr. Alisher USMANOV was re-elected as its President at the FIE Electoral Congress in Moscow, Russia. Mr. USMANOV who has been FIE President since 2008, will lead the federation for another four year term.
Mr. USMANOV said after the elections: “Today’s decisions lay the main foundations for the development of fencing over the coming years. The Congress has set concrete goals and developed processes to achieve them.
I am grateful for the delegates’ support for re-electing me as President of the FIE. I consider this decision as recognition of the results achieved so far, and above all as an endorsement of my strategy to develop fencing on a global level. We have a lot of work to do and the FIE is facing challenging tasks. I am certain that the 100th anniversary of fencing in 2013 will be a year of success, accomplishments, and the start of a new phase of the sport’s evolvement.”
The Congress also voted for Sofia (BUL) to be host city of the 2014 FIE Senior World Championships. The 2013 Junior and Cadet World Championships were awarded to Porec (CRO). Varna (BUL) will host the 2013 Veterans World Championships.
The 137 delegates elected the members of the FIE Executive Committee for the next four years as well as the members of the various FIE commissions.
The world’s top ranked junior and senior fencers for 2012 were honoured in the framework of the Congress for their outstanding performances. The Executive Committee also nominated the best referees for 2012 in the three weapons: Foil - Douglas FINDLAY (USA); epee - Mihail PAGHIEV (MDA); sabre - Kang Zhao ZHENG (HKG).
