Handball - 07 Dec 2012 - Nantes in France has been chosen to host the first edition of the Men's EHF Cup Final Tournament, the climax to the new second-tier European clubs handball competition.
The event will involve four teams and semi-finals and finals at the home of French club HBC Nantes on May 18 and 19, 2013. HBC Nantes will participate in the group phase of the competition and stage the final event even if they do not qualify.
The club, which plays at a 5,000 seat arena, has previously hosted the Women's World Championship in 2007 and the French League Cup in 2010 and 2011.
Jean Brihault, president of the European Handball Federation, said: “We considered a number of excellent applications to host the event, but the French city of Nantes presented us with a concept that we felt would really work, especially in the first year.
“Handball is hugely popular in the region and with the support of the club and the local region we are sure that the premiere edition of the new EHF Cup Final Tournament will be in safe hands.”
The EHF Cup has been formed from the merger of the former EHF Cup and EHF Cup Winners’ Cup and is the most important clubs competition behind the EHF Champions League.
