New Zealand is to stage a $50,000 international badminton event in April 2013.
The New Zealand Open, to be held on Auckland's North Shore, has been upgraded to a Badminton World Federation Grand Prix tournament, putting it on the third tier of badminton tournaments.
It will be part of a three-tournament international swing through Oceania, following a Grand Prix Gold tournament in Sydney and before the Tahiti International.
Badminton New Zealand said it expects to attract 350 players from 20 countries to the tournament, including up to 20 top-ranked players from the sport's strongholds of China, Korea, Japan and Malaysia.
The title sponsor of the New Zealand Open will be Skycity Entertainment Group, an owner of casinos across Australasia.
Simon Jamieson, general manager of Skycity Auckland, said: "Badminton is a very popular sport in many different countries across the world, particularly in Asia. The New Zealand Badminton Open will be broadcast internationally and Skycity is happy to be able to come on board as naming rights sponsor and support this world-class event."
