Olympics - 02 Jan 2013 - Naoki Inose, the newly elected governor of Tokyo, has been appointed chairman of Tokyo 2020, the city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, as the bid has unveiled three new sponsors: Yahoo! Japan, the country’s largest internet portal; GREE, the mobile social gaming company; and Yomiuri Shimbun, the newspaper.
Inose said: “I would like to personally thank the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee for their unyielding passion and dedication throughout this bid campaign. We have learned important lessons from our previous bid, and now have the experience to deliver a stronger and improved bid plan. I will do everything possible to host the 2020 Games, by uniting the country as one through close collaboration with the Bid Committee, national government, and sports and business communities.”
In December, Inose was elected as the new governor of the city to succeed the nationalist Shintaro Ishihara, who resigned to form his own political party. Inose is regarded as the political heir of the sometimes controversial Ishihara.
Late last month, the conservative and nationalist Shinzo Abe was elected as Japan's new prime minister, representing the conservative, pro-big business Liberal Democratic Party in power.
Yahoo! Japan, GREE and Yomiuri Shimbun have all become official bid partners, bringing to 11 the number of companies supporting the bid.
They are: Asics (sports goods); Descente (sportswear and related articles); JTB Corp (travel support services); Kinki Nippon Tourist Co Ltd. (travel support services); Mizuno Corporation. (sports goods); All Nippon Airways (airline); Japan Airlines (airline); ALSOK / SOHGO (security services); Yahoo! Japan; GREE; and Yomiuri Shimbun.
Meanwhile, Tokyo 2020 has unveiled details of its masterplan for hosting the games, focusing on a “compact games” proposal with 85 per cent of competition venues within an eight-kilometre radius of the athletes’ village which will be built at Chuo Ward’s Harumi waterfront district.
Tokyo is bidding against Istanbul and Madrid to host the games, with the International Olympic Committee due to select the winning city in September.
