Handball - 30 Jan 2013 - By Martin Ross
Canal Plus, the French pay-television broadcaster, and BeIN Sport, Al Jazeera’s French pay-television broadcaster, have submitted bids for media rights in an invitation to tender process launched by the FFHB, the French handball federation, it is reported.
The FFHB recently launched a tender for broadcast rights to the matches of France’s men’s and women’s international teams, along with the women’s domestic league in France and the women’s league cup competition, and the two pay-television broadcasters submitted offers by the deadline, reports L’Equipe.
The tender covers the next four seasons and the rights have all been integrated into one package, including rights to around 16 matches per year of the French men’s team (excluding matches at major international tournaments).
Canal Plus is the incumbent rights-holder for France’s international matches, paying around €750,000 ($1.01 million) a year, while BeIN Sport holds rights to the women’s top league in France for a nominal sum.
The two subscription broadcasters are already going head to head in the battle for broadcast rights in France to English soccer’s top-tier Premier League from 2013-14 to 2015-16.
The duo are thought to have submitted bids ahead of last week’s deadline and are now entering a second round of bidding, with rights to the English top flight currently held by Canal Plus in a deal worth around €25 million per season.
