IOC and PyeongChang 2018 Sign Marketing Agreement as Special Olympics Begin |

Olympics - 30 Jan 2013 - The International Olympic Committee said today that it has signed a marketing agreement with PyeongChang 2018, enabling the organising committee for the 2018 winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea to begin its marketing activities “in earnest,” including the recruitment of national partners.
The so-called Marketing Plan Agreement was signed by Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, and Jin Sun Kim, president of PyeongChang 2018. The deal awards exclusive use of Olympic intellectual property, including the Olympic rings and other symbols, to the organising committee.
PyeongChang 2018 has said that it expects the marketing agreement to generate about Won1.1 trillion ($1 billion), most of which will come from domestic sponsorship deals, licensing and ticketing.
The IOC said: “The MPA is a written agreement between the IOC and the organising committee, which specifies the obligations of the organisers in relation to their marketing programme. This ensures that all parties linked to PyeongChang 2018 have a clear understanding of Olympic marketing principles, protecting and preserving the image and integrity of the Olympic Movement. A strong marketing programme is particularly important, as the operational budget of games organising committees, along with the IOC’s contribution, is primarily funded by private investment.”
Meanwhile, 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 106 countries have arrived in PyeongChang for the Special Olympics World Winter Games, which began in the mountain town yesterday.
The opening ceremony was attended by Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's pro-democracy opposition leader and former Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who said the Special Olympics will celebrate "the supremacy of the human spirit over everything else."
The event runs until February 5.
