Intersport, the international sports retail chain, has today signed a new global sponsorship deal with FIBA, basketball's governing body, covering prominent national team events around the world for the next three years.
The agreement includes all continental championships in 2013 and 2015, the 2014 men’s FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain and the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.
As the official sports retailer for FIBA competitions from 2013 to 2015, Intersport will enjoy extensive sponsorship and licensing rights, which will include operating official shops for the sale of event merchandise at the host arenas.
Intersport already has close links with international basketball as a global partner of Euroleague, the top European clubs competition, and it is also a sponsor of the men’s and women’s EHF European Handball Championships.
In addition to next year’s two global tournaments, the events included in the new deal with FIBA are the men’s and women’s competitions at the EuroBaskets, the FIBA Africa Championships, the FIBA Americas Championships, the FIBA Asia Championships and the FIBA Oceania Championships, all of which will be held in 2013 and 2015.
Last month, FIBA secured Beko, the Turkish domestic appliance brand, as the presenting sponsor of the 2013 men’s EuroBasket in Slovenia and the 2014 Basketball World Cup.
FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann said today: “FIBA is delighted to have entered into this partnership with Intersport. This co-operation represents a significant step for the FIBA competitions retail activation and we look forward to the appearance of a full range of licensed event products. FIBA is proud to be able to count on the proven experience and high competence of the leading retailer of sporting goods.”
