Basketball - 07 Mar 2013 - Sportfive, the international sports marketing agency, has signed a new agreement with FIBA, basketball’s world body, for the distribution of media rights in Asia to its competitions up until and including 2015.
The deal covers the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship in the Philippines, the 2013 FIBA Asia Women’s Championship in Thailand, the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain, the 2014 FIBA Women’s World Championship in Turkey and the FIBA Asia Championships for men and women in 2015, but excludes distribution in the territories of Japan and the pan-Arab region.
Sportfive said: "As one of the major Olympic summer sports, basketball has played an important role in Sportfive’s portfolio of media rights for a considerable time. The agency is a long-standing partner of FIBA and has successfully distributed media rights in Asia since 2006.
"Sportfive has progressively increased media revenues and distribution for the FIBA basketball properties and has developed a strong relationship with FIBA across the organisation." Shaila-Ann Rao, Sportfive International’s chief executive, said that the agency hopes that the renewal with FIBA "will become just one of many projects as we move forward this year and develop new basketball opportunities."
At the beginning of 2007, FIBA announced a media rights deal with Sportfive covering Asia and the Middle East that ran until 2011, but Sportfive also worked with FIBA last year to sell media rights in Asia.
FIBA Media & Marketing Services, the federation’s in-house commercial arm created last year, sells media rights to FIBA competitions around the world, working with agencies in selected territories.
