'Financially-challenged' Athletics South Africa Buoyed by 'Critical' TV Deal |

Athletics - 07 Mar 2013 - Athletics South Africa, the beleaguered athletics federation in the country, has received a boost after agreeing a one-year broadcast rights deal with SABC, the South African public-service broadcaster.
SABC is to provide television, digital and radio coverage of ASA Events, comprising the Comrades Marathon, Two Oceans Marathon, Soweto Marathon and track and field competitions.
James Evans, the ASA president, said that the deal could be extended for two more years and admitted that the agreement was very timely in providing financial support to the federation.
He said: "This agreement comes at a very critical time for us as ASA. It is no secret that we are financially challenged as a sporting federation.
"The SABC’s commitment is a new lease for us to continue to stage world-class events with the country’s biggest broadcaster. The SABC has been and will continue to be ASA’s most critical partner."
ASA has encountered financial difficulties in recent years, losing a string of sponsors and appointing a committee to address its fiscal woes in December, as it bid to service a debt in the region of R4.3 million ($469,836).
Gideon Sam, president of Sascoc, the South African national Olympic committee, said last month that it would step in to assist athletes as ASA attempted to rectify its financial problems.
