The Russian Basketball Federation has appointed Yulia Anikeeva as its first-ever female president on a permanent basis.
Anikeeva received 97 votes, compared with 63 for Svetlana Abrosimova and two for regional basketball official Sergei Ptashny.
Anikeeva, deputy chief executive of the VTB United League, which includes basketball clubs from across eastern Europe, had been serving as acting president of the RBF since her predecessor Andrei Krasnenkov was forced to resign in June following disagreements with the executive board.
One of the first items on her agenda is to resolve a long-held dispute with the nine-team VTB League, which wants the RBF to give it the right to crown the Russian champions, rather than the ailing Russian Professional Basketball League
That would allow the VTB League to provide qualification for the Euroleague, the top European clubs competition, for the first time and herald the end of the domestic championship.
