Over two-thirds of French people want France to host the 2024 Olympic Games, according to an online study by SportLab, the communications group, which found that 64 per cent of those questioned would like the games to take place in Paris.
The study, carried out at the end of September and beginning of October this year, involving a representative sample of 1,000 French people aged 15 and over, also found that 67 per cent of respondents were strongly or mildly in favour of the games being held by France.
The result was even more positive among those aged 15 to 24, with 84 per cent of this age group in favour of holding the games in France and 82 per cent favouring a games in Paris.
Loïc Yviquel, co-president of SportLab Group, said: “Olympic Games in France, or even more, in Paris is above all an ambitious and enthusiastic civil society project. Even if this French candidature is still hypothetical, the score in this study is particularly high in view of the Munich vote against hosting the 2022 winter Olympic Games in their city (51 per cent against in a referendum on November 10).
“France is ready to ignite over this kind of project, whether it’s a candidature for 2024 or 2028 or even 2032, if necessary.”
The chances of France launching a bid to host the Olympic Games, almost certainly in Paris, in 2024 appeared to receive a further boost earlier this month after Francois Hollande, the French president, held a meeting with Thomas Bach, the newly-elected International Olympic Committee president.
The IOC said in a statement: “The pair discussed the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and expectations for the French athletes, France’s commitment to the fight against doping and illegal betting in sport, and sports development in France. The French President discussed a potential Olympic bid for 2024.”
A series of meetings between top French sports and government officials, including Hollande, to discuss a possible bid have also recently taken place.
Other cities that have expressed interest in bidding to host the 2024 games include: a US city; Rome in Italy; Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Doha in Qatar; Berlin or Hamburg in Germany; Toronto in Canada; Melbourne in Australia; a South African city; and Baku in Azerbaijan.
The International Olympic Committee is due to select the host city in a vote in 2017.
