Cancun, in Mexico, is to stage this year's Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships, the FIG, gymanastics governing body, has announced.
It will be the first time that the biennial event has been held in the Americas, and indeed only the third time it has taken place outsde of Europe, after Nanjing, China in 2006 and Perth, Australia in 1997.
Aerobics is not presently an Olympics discipline, but the FIG said it hopes that by taking the championships to different parts of the world, it will prove its global appeal to the International Olympic Committee.
The federation said: "The discipline is underscoring its universality by turning to a third continent, one of the International Olympic Committee’s requirements for becoming an Olympic sport."
The 2014 Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships will take place from June 27 to 29, and Cancun will additionally stage the 6th World Age Group Competitions a few days earlier.
The 2012 championships were held in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.
