Busan in South Korea has emerged as the fourth bidder for sailing’s ISAF 2018 World Championships, the host of which will be decided in May.
Aarhus in Denmark, The Hague in the Netherlands and Gdynia in Poland all met the March 1 deadline of ISAF, the international sailing federation, to submit bids for the quadrennial championships.
Busan missed the original deadline but was yesterday cleared to proceed by the ISAF 2018 World Championships Evaluation Panel.
The candidates are expected to present their plans to the panel, chaired by ISAF vice-president Chris Atkins, at the federation’s headquarters in Southampton, in the south of England, on March 25.
The panel will produce a report, and recommend the host city to the ISAF executive committee at its mid-year meeting on May 10, when the committee will either accept the recommendation or ask the panel to review its decision.
Aarhus, the Hague and Gdynia all bid unsuccessfully to host the 2014 World Championships, which will take place in Santander in Spain from September 8 to 21.Sportcal
