South Africa has withdrawn from hosting the 2016 Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup, having been awarded the event in December last year.
The Fifa executive committee is due to decide on a new host country at a meeting in September.
In the original bidding process, South Africa, Norway and Ireland were all vying to stage the biennial event.
Danny Jordaan, the president of the South African Football Association, was quoted as saying that the decision to hand back the hosting rights came after Fifa took the decision to link the Under-20 tournament and the Women's World Cup.
South Africa is bidding to host the 2019 Women's World Cup and, if the bid is successful, they would be expected to be awarded the 2018 Under-20 Women's World Cup.
