With a number of important meetings lining up alongside the SportAccord Convention, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, it promises to be busy days ahead for ASOIF. Gatherings will kick off with the ASOIF Council meeting on 15 April 2018. Council will prepare the items to be discussed by the ASOIF General Assembly, which will be held two days later, on 17 April 2018.
IF governance and the presentation of the results of the second IF governance review will be discussed in detail during the General Assembly. All ASOIF members, including the five new Associate members (the governing bodies of the five new sports on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Programme), submitted the second questionnaire by mid-February 2018. During its General Assembly, ASOIF’s Governance Task Force (GTF) will deliver a detailed report outlining the key findings and the evolution since the first assessment in 2016 / 2017. An update will also be provided about the creation of a Governance Monitoring Unit (GMU), a concept which was approved by the ASOIF Council in November 2017. The GMU will guide IFs on governance matters.
Other key points on the agenda of the ASOIF General Assembly include:
- ASOIF project on the Role of the IFs & Future of Global Sport;
- report from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on matters related to the IFs and the Olympic Games;
- report from the Tokyo Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in 2020;
- update on the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in 2018;
- presentation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA);
- revision of ASOIF Statutes; and
- election of one ASOIF Council Member.
After the General Assembly, ASOIF will organise a media briefing with President Francesco Ricci Bitti and Executive Director Andrew Ryan.
Other meetings scheduled next week are an ASOIF working meeting with the member federations on 16 April 2018 and a joint meeting with the IOC on 18 April 2018 to address the outcomes of the General Assembly. ASOIF will also meet with the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), foreseen for 18 April 2018.
