UIPM - 2008 Olympic Games reported

UIPM President Schormann attended the 120th IOC Session in Beijing where various reports where made by IOC Commissions and organising committees for the Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010, London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Games. In addition, elections for the IOC Executive Board and IOC membership also took place.

On 6 August, UIPM President, Mr Klaus Schormann had the priviledge to be a participant in the Olympic Games Torch Relay. President Schormann ran with the torch at 0900 at the North West Corner of the intersection of the Chang An Jie and West road of Tian An Men Square.

On 8 August, President Schormann together with Secretary General Joel Bouzou attended the joint meeting between the Summer Olympic International Federations and the IOC Executive Board. While in Beijing, Secretary General Joel Bouzou also met with the President of the International Paralympics Committee Sir Phil Craven and the new Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace, Mr Wilfried Lemke, to discuss sport and social cohesion.

President Schormann was present in Beijing during the entire Olympic period, using this time to meet with other International Federation representatives, IOC Members and extended Olympic family, BOCOG officials and UIPM officials during many receptions to exchange opinions about the present and future task in the Olympic Movement.

President Schormann, Secretary General, Joel Bouzou and Sport Director, Mauro Tirinnanzi met with the four Bid cities for 2016 - Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Chicago and Tokyo, to discuss the facilities for modern pentathlon and learn more about their overall preparations. President Schormann and Secretary General, Joel Bouzou also met with the organising committee of the 1st Youth Olympic Games 2010 Singapore. They presented their plans for modern pentathlon and also informed UIPM about the creation of a national federation of modern pentathlon in
Singapore.

At various times throughout his stay in Beijing, President Schormann met with the Executive Board members of Chinese Modern Pentathlon Association CMPA to discuss the sport programme for the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou and the first steps for the preparation of the Modern Pentathlon World Championships 2010 in Chengdu. On 25 August, President Schormann presented to CMPA President Mr Jiadou a commitment of the UIPM Executive Board to donate USD 10,000 for the development of youth projects in the Sichuan Province which was heavily affected by the earthquake in May. Also on this day, President Schormann attended the UIPM Technical Committee meeting where he gave a report about the sport related political activates of the Executive Board and briefed them about his vision for the future of modern pentathlon in the Olympic movement based on the combined format which has to be decided at the UIPM Congress in Antigua.

The UIPM Executive Board, chaired by President Schormann, held an extraordinary meeting in Beijing on 17 and 18 August to further discuss the rules for the development of modern pentathlon combined format run/shoot in the lead up to the General Assembly in November. In addition, they also made a decision on the host cities for the 2010 and 2011 World Championships. Chengdu, China will be host city in 2010 while Cairo, Egypt will be host city in 2011.
