2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships goes hybrid in Hamburg

After the success of going virtual for the 2021 World Rowing Indoor Championships, the 2022 World Rowing Indoor Championships (WRICH), presented by Concept2 and hosted in Hamburg, Germany, will be staged as a hybrid event.

Competitors will have the choice to compete in-person at the Arena or virtually from anywhere in the world. This event is scheduled to take place during the weekend of 25-26 February 2022.

Athletes choosing to compete in Hamburg will not need to qualify for the WRICH in advance. The number of in-person competitors will be restricted to the capacity of the venue.

“We are proud to welcome the world’s indoor rowing elite to The Arena and are looking forward in anticipation for peak performances in the competition,” says Katharina Von Kodolitsch, Chair of the Hamburg Organising Committee.

In order to provide a race opportunity for competitors who may continue to face challenges travelling to events in February, there will be an option to compete in the 2022 WRICH virtually. Virtual competitor places will be limited and competitors will need to qualify for a chance to compete in the WRICH virtually. A list of race categories (with virtual places) and the qualification process for these virtual places will be announced on in July 2021.

The decision to organise a hybrid WRICH was made, not only in anticipation that travel restrictions may still be in place in 2022, but also to continue to explore both in-person and virtual race opportunities for indoor rowing.

“The success of going virtual for the 2021 World Rowing Indoor Championships has given us the impetus to incorporate virtual into the 2022 event in Hamburg,” says World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland. “A hybrid model makes this event truly global and gives everyone an opportunity to participate, be it at the venue in Hamburg or remotely wherever you are in the world”

World Rowing, in collaboration with the Organising Committee in Hamburg, will monitor the impacts of COVID-19 as the event approaches, and implement an appropriate COVID protocol for in-person competitors. Should the possibility to host an in-person event for the 2022 WRICH no longer be viable, World Rowing and the Hamburg Organising Committee will determine whether the event should become a fully virtual competition by 1 December 2021.
