The Council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) held a video conference today in order to discuss key items for the upcoming 44th ASOIF General Assembly, which will be held virtually on 9 November 2020. Originally scheduled for spring this year, the annual gathering of ASOIF’s membership had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s General Assembly will feature the election for the next term of the ASOIF Presidency. The Council confirmed that Francesco Ricci Bitti, Honorary Life President of the International Tennis Federation and current ASOIF President, will stand for the third and final term of office at the General Assembly. No other nominations for this position were received by the official deadline of 25 October, 15 days before the election. The voting will be conducted by secure electronic means during the virtual meeting.
Francesco Ricci Bitti, who chaired today’s Council meeting, said: “It has been an honour and pleasure alike to serve ASOIF and its member federations in the past years. I am ready and committed to provide continuity through what is proving to be very challenging times for sport and to prepare the future of ASOIF.”
The General Assembly will also decide on certain amendments to the ASOIF Statutes to ensure gender neutral language and allow ASOIF to hold its General Assembly virtually and voting by electronic means in the future. In addition, the ASOIF member International Federations (IFs) will receive updates from the International Olympic Committee on matters related to the IFs and the Olympic Games, as well as reports from the Organising Committees of the Tokyo 2020 and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and from WADA. The virtual meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube. The full agenda is available online.
The Council today appointed Sabrina Ibáñez, Secretary General of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), as new Chair of the ASOIF Diversity and Gender Equality Consultative Group, and Tom Dielen, Secretary General of World Archery, as new Chair of the ASOIF Parasport Consultative Group. The Council also approved the reappointment of the current Chairs of ASOIF’s other six consultative groups.
The next ASOIF Council meeting is scheduled for February 2021.
