Olympics - 07 Dec 2012 - Arjuna Ranatunga, the former star cricketer who is now a member of the Sri Lankan parliament, has warned that the country’s national Olympic committee risks being suspended over corruption allegations.
Pointing to the example of the Indian Olympic Association, which was suspended by the International Olympic Committee this week in a a long-running wrangle over the IOA’s elections and a controversial new Sports Code which, the IOC maintains, are in breach of the Olympic Charter, Ranatunga told parliament that the Sri Lankan NOC faces a similar threat because of widespread corruption.
Ranatunga called on Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the country’s sports minister, to intervene and halt the corruption.
