Rugby Union - 01 Feb 2013 - The Rugby Football Union, the governing body for rugby union in England, has entered an agreement with IBM, the information technology giant, to provide in-game statistics and insights to enhance the experience of viewing fans.
Under the five-year strategic tie-up announced today, IBM becomes the official analytics partner of the RFU and will implement a solution offering game viewers information about the participating teams and players, notably through the IBM TryTracker.
IBM’s Predictive Analytics software will analyse data from Opta, the sports data provider, to offer a pre-game breakdown of what each team needs to do to increase their chances of winning a match, starting with England’s home fixture against Scotland on Saturday in the opening round of the Six Nations Championship.
IBM already provides similar analysis at major tennis tournaments, including Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open.
The IBM TryTracker can be viewed on the RFU.com website and on mobile devices and tablets and will feature the ‘Keys to the Game’, three areas of performance considered crucial to each team in the forthcoming match.
The platform will also depict ‘Momentum’ in the match through visual graphics and use current and historical data to identify the three players on each team regarded as the ‘Key Influencers’.
As well as providing in-game data, IBM is to implement a Customer Relationship Management transformational plan for the RFU, with IBM Analytics enabling the RFU “to better understand information on rugby fans, their needs and preferences, to enable the organisation to communicate with supporters and participants in a more personalised way.”
RFU chief commercial officer Sophie Goldschmidt said: “We’re delighted to be working with a company of IBM’s calibre. This important new long-term agreement will enable the RFU to give fans even more insight and understanding into what’s happening on the pitch and why, as well as ensuring we remain at the forefront of new technology to enrich the overall fan experience.
“Our plans also involve utilising IBM’s expertise to further benefit the grassroots game and enhance performance at the elite level.”
