Doha in Qatar was chosen to host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2018 in a decision made by the FIG, the international gymnastics federation, at the weekend.
The decision marks the latest development in Doha and Qatar’s ambition to become a major centre for the hosting of international sports events.
Qatar is already slated to host the men’s World Handball Championships in 2015, road cycling’s World Championships in 2016 and soccer’s Fifa World Cup in 2022. However, Doha was bitterly disappointed to be left off the shortlist of cities bidding to host the Olympic Games in 2020 because of concerns over summer temperatures in the city.
The Qatar Gymnastics Federation was established as recently as 2000, but the bid team said: “The winning bid was based upon an ‘all in one’ concept with Doha ready to host the championships at renowned and state of the art Aspire Zone. Competitors, officials and spectators can look forward to enjoying the convenience and comfort of world-class facilities throughout the competition arena, accommodation and expert medical services for elite athletes courtesy of Aspetar.”
