The Council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) met on 6 October 2026 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to further progress with the implementation of the ASOIF Strategy 2026–2032 and discuss key developments across the Olympic Movement, including the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC’s) “Fit for the Future” strategy, and preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and LA28 Olympic Games.

The meeting was held alongside the SportAccord Forum 2026.

Implementing the ASOIF Strategy 2026–2032

As part of the implementation roadmap for the new ASOIF Strategy, the Council agreed to conduct a membership consultation on the strategic refinements of its seven Commissions, with a view to strengthening their value as member-led platforms providing topical expertise on pressing matters.

ASOIF President Ingmar De Vos said: “Our new Strategy comes with a clear roadmap for strengthening advocacy, collaboration and our contribution to the Olympic Games. By working together, we can reinforce the collective voice and position of Summer Olympic International Federations within the Olympic Movement and beyond.”

The Council also reviewed progress of other items across the Strategy’s three pillars: Advocacy, Influence and Representation; Olympic Games Excellence; and Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing.

Fit for the Future

The Council discussed the IOC’s new strategic direction, “Fit for the Future”, including the new discipline-based methodology for determining the Olympic programme, which will apply from Brisbane 2032 onwards.

ASOIF emphasised the importance of a transparent and evidence-based process in which International Federations potentially affected by the evaluation have sufficient time to understand the methodology, provide relevant information and engage in meaningful dialogue with the IOC.

ASOIF therefore supports the relevant decisions being taken by the 147th IOC Session in April 2027 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, rather than through an accelerated process concluding in December 2026.

Dakar 2026 enters final preparations

The Council discussed the latest preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games which are progressing across infrastructure and sport operations, with the Organising Committee now entering the final stages of Games-time delivery.

The lighting of the Youth Olympic flame in Athens on 10 September marked another milestone in the countdown. The Games will take place from 31 October to 13 November, bringing together around 2,700 young athletes aged up to 17 in 25 competition sports and 10 engagement sports across three host zones: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.

LA28 operational update

The Council noted that the LA28 Organising Committee is accelerating recruitment across sport, venue operations and other key functional areas as preparations move towards operational delivery. This includes the development of sport-specific delivery models and preparations for test events.

The LA28 Organising Committee also held a dedicated International Federations workshop on 5 October, providing an update on its latest operational activities.

Women’s Leadership Workshop strengthens next generation of leaders

Council members were also briefed on the successful second edition of the joint ASOIF-IOC Women’s Leadership Workshop, held from 3 to 5 October in Lausanne.

The workshop brought together more than 40 women representing 30 Summer and Winter Olympic sports. Led by leadership trainers from EqualCareers, the programme focused on practical skills in leadership, communication, negotiation and campaigning, supporting participants in taking on greater responsibilities within their organisations.

The next ASOIF Council meeting is scheduled for 2 March 2027.
