In a year when the ITTF is celebrating a century of table tennis, few moments have captured the spirit of that centenary quite like this one. ITTF President Petra Sörling travelled to China this week to mark the 55th anniversary of the historic China-US “Ping-Pong Diplomacy,” a reminder, if one were needed, that this sport has always been about far more than what happens on the table. 

The centrepiece of the visit was the Commemorative Conference on 10 April at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, attended by more than 500 guests including Ping-Pong Diplomacy veterans, youth representatives and sports officials from both countries. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng addressed the gathering and read out a congratulatory letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who reflected on how, 55 years ago, “a small ball moved a big ball” and called on today’s younger generation to carry that spirit of friendship and cooperation forward.

Petra Sörling was among the invited speakers, and her message was rooted firmly in what the ITTF stands for. “Table tennis has evolved from a competitive sport into a bridge connecting different countries and cultures, bringing people closer together through dialogue,” she told the audience. She spoke of the ITTF’s century-long commitment to making table tennis a truly global sport, one that values human connection as much as competition, and of the responsibility that comes with that legacy. “We care not only about gold medals and records, but also about the human connections that our sport nurtures.”

Accompanied by ITTF Executive Vice President and USATT CEO Virginia Sung, her visit began two days earlier, on 8 April, with a delegation to Peking University alongside USA Table Tennis representatives. There, veterans of the original 1971 exchanges joined university staff and students for a symposium and a friendly session at the Qiu Debai Gymnasium, the venue for table tennis at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The group later travelled to Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province for further exchanges at the Zhengding National Table Tennis Training Base.

At the conference, Ping-Pong Diplomacy veterans Zhang Xielin and Yao Zhenxu were among those who shared their personal accounts of that historic chapter, while Zheng Minzhi, Liang Geliang, Judy Hoarfrost and Connie Sweeris took to the court together for a “Friendship Ball” exhibition match, one of those rare sporting moments that needs no translation.

For the ITTF, the anniversary is a natural fit with its centenary narrative: a sport born in living rooms and church halls that went on to help reopen diplomatic channels between two of the world’s great powers. As Petra Sörling put it, the goal now is to ensure that spirit is not just remembered, but lived. 

“We will continue to expand the humanistic value of table tennis and carry forward the legacy of Ping-Pong Diplomacy, fostering unity among table tennis enthusiasts worldwide and building an inclusive and warm table tennis family.”
